“The Argonaut” is a series of 26 monographs about ethnic minorities facing extinction, which we feel deserve serious attention. Many of these people, cultures, religions and traditions have survived unchanged for centuries.
The series contains installments of 28 minutes each, which closely follow important figures encountered in the most remote parts of the world, the last survivors who can pass on the secrets of their cultures. The style is intimate, personal storytelling, about the sounds and rituals of the places described, and their inhabitants’ primordial relationship with nature.

CHAM “The Sacred Dance”
May 29th 2008 at Angelica Library in Rome, Italy
In order to escape religion persecutions, the Tibetan tantric Buddhism is nowadays observed in Ladakh, a northern India region.
The pictures were taken in Lamayuru, a monastery located in Ladakh. Every year, on the anniversary of “The Water Snake,” they celebrate “Cham” (sacred dance). This event is part of the religious tradition called “Drukung Kargyudpa,” one of the several aspects of Buddhism, in which two schools Sutra and Tantra meet.
